lecture technique can be seen as one of the ways lecturers pass on knowledge to students and therefore because students priority is to acquire knowledge, it is very essential. in cases where new topics are being introduced in lectures , a little background reading would be good to enable the students to have a slight idea of what is being taught. Lectures are very important to attend as it is the main source of knowledge in the sense that the new topics or topics overall are being introduced. It also prepares student for seminars or tutorial and even exams.
The idea of using a friends note , power point slides or listen again isn't bad but it shouldn't be the only source it can be for crosschecking incase of omission or to check if your in place but not the main source cause most of the times, power point slides don't contain everything said in by the lecturer and a friends note cannot be 100% accurate cause he or she may have missed some points and also listen again may not be clear and it may be boring cause there is difference between just listening to it and being there actually. In my opinion note taking is good but there is an old saying that you cant serve two masters at a time so listening and trying to write down what is being taught is difficult. In process of writing you may miss a point and in process of listening without writing you are bound to forget. So i feel background reading would really help cause then not everything would be needed to be taken down since the student would already know it and for the taking of notes i would say it should be well organised and brief if possible bullet points. In a situation where you have no idea of what is being taught then its really stressful writing what you don't understand. but nevertheless this doesn't apply to everything cause note taking is very very important and it can be used to acquire knowledge later when doing personal studies.
Well in my lectures i use linear note taking mostly but i realised recently that bullet point are kinda better cause when doing studies again i get to fill spaces and scribble little important bits and they help me. My lectures are really what's the word can i say ' packed with lots of information' wow if you actually miss a section or anything and you don't go back to check well there is a possibility you drown until you go back to read then you'll know. I'll say overall my lectures are significant. I wont see summarising or re-writing notes as a waste of time in fact it is very essential and it helps to put in new findings and it kinda makes the student sure like makes them know it by hand cause it helps the student master the work and also revising the work helps too.
Basically its all about background reading before time, taking notes, listening, re-writting and revising the work :)
